"Family visa" can refer to two categories: temporary visits (B-2 visitor visa for family/friends) or permanent immigration (family-sponsored green card).
Temporary Family Visit (B-2 Visa)
Use the B-2 for visiting relatives. Process is identical to the visitor visa above. Provide invitation letter from US family member detailing relationship, visit purpose (e.g., holiday, event), and accommodation. Prove intent to return.
Permanent Family Immigration (Immigrant Visa/Green Card)
US citizens or permanent residents can sponsor certain relatives for permanent residence.
Eligibility Categories:
- Immediate Relatives (no wait): Spouses, unmarried children under 21, parents of US citizens (21+).
- Preference Categories (wait times vary): Adult children, siblings, etc.
Steps:
- Petitioner Files Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative) with USCIS (US citizen/LPR sponsor).
- Approval → If immediate relative, visa often available immediately. For preferences, wait for priority date (check Visa Bulletin).
- Beneficiary Applies:
- If in US: File I-485 for adjustment.
- If abroad: Consular processing via NVC—submit DS-260, Affidavit of Support (I-864), documents, medical exam, interview.
- Affidavit of Support → Sponsor proves income to support relative.
Processing can take months to years. Check uscis.gov for forms/fees.
